Bamanwada Jain Tirth: Presiding Deity and Location
Bamanwada Jain Tirth, also known as Bamanwada Shwetambar Jain Tirth, is an ancient and revered pilgrimage site dedicated to Shri Mahavir Bhagwan. The idol of Shri Mahavir Bhagwan, made of praval (coral) and seated in a lotus posture, stands 60 cm tall. This temple is nestled at the foothills near Virwada, approximately 7 km away from Sirohi Road in Rajasthan.

Historically referred to as Brahmanvatak, Bamanwada Jain Temple is often celebrated as “Jivitswami” or the “Living Divine Presence.” The temple’s origin is traced back to the time of Raja Samprati, who vowed to undertake pilgrimages to five sacred shrines, including Brahmanwad, four times a year. This vow was also shared by renowned Acharyas such as Nagarjunsuriji, Skandansuri, and Padaliptasuri, emphasizing the site’s significance in Jain religious traditions.
Throughout the centuries, the temple has undergone numerous renovations. One significant restoration was conducted in Vikram year 821 under the guidance of Sri Jayanandsuriji and the Porwal minister Sri Samanthshah. Historical records like the “Ashtottari Tirthmala” composed by Sri Mahendrasuriji in Vikram year 1300 mention the presence of Foot-Prints and a stupa of Shri Mahavir Bhagwan within the temple.
The shrine’s glory has been immortalized in literary works by poets such as Sri Lavanyasamaygani in Vikram year 1529, Sri Vishalsundarji in Vikram year 1685, Pandit Sri Kshekushalji in Vikram year 1657, and Sri Virvijayji in Vikram year 1708. The latest renovation culminated in a consecration ceremony conducted by Acharya Sri Sushilsurishvarji on May 5, 1979.
It is believed that this site marks where Bhagwan Mahavir endured the torture of nails being driven into his ears, making it an even more revered and sacred place. The shrine has been visited regularly by notable Jain Acharyas and pilgrims over the centuries. The local ruler, Shri Shivsinhji Maharaj of Sirohi, attributed his ascension to the throne to his devotion and faith in this sacred tirth, donating land and resources to ensure the temple’s upkeep.

A significant event in the tirth’s modern history was the All India Jain Shvetamber Porwal Conference held in Vikram year 1989 in the presence of the esteemed Yogiraj of Mount Abu, Sri Vijayshantisurishvarji.
The temple also showcases painted marble slabs covered with glass, illustrating the 27 previous incarnations of Bhagwan Mahavir, adding to the temple’s artistic and spiritual appeal. The idol of Bhagwan Mahavir made of sand particles and pearl plaster stands out for its uniqueness and beauty, captivating the hearts of all who visit.
